MEET THE OWNER

Sarah Macon
Owner | Proprietor | Teacher

Hey there, I’m Sarah, owner of MaconAire Heating and Cooling and an instructor at the BTrained HVAC training center in Birmingham, AL.

I established MaconAire for many reasons, but most of all because the world needs more honest and reliable technicians. Seeing women in HVAC is a rarity, but it won't be for long. Gals like me add an enormous amount to this trade, and I am doing my part to encourage more to try it out. It's NOT for everyone, and if you hate tight crawl spaces and hot attics then stay away! But there is so much to gain from this line of work.

My current mission is to help everyone I train in the classroom or on the job to absorb as much of what I know and have experienced as they can. That's where you come in. None of this can happen without customers who are willing to try us out and see how exceptional the MaconAire experience is. I truly hope that you will choose us and let us get to know you!

Interested in my personal journey to HVAC? My father pulled me out of public school during 3rd grade and told us that my brother and I would be homeschooling from then on. And so we did, and what an adventure it was! Our home base was not “home”, but rather the new home that my dad was constructing. Some days our “teach yourself” sessions would take place on lumber piles at Home Depot and other days bundled up in a truck. After graduating as Valedictorian from Chelsea High School in ‘08, I went on to study at Samford University, convinced that I would be a surgeon. I decided to tack on a Music minor along with my Biochemistry major so I wouldn't lose my skills as a pianist. I joined Air Force ROTC as a way to pay for medical school, but also for the sheer challenge of it all. All of that was fine and dandy…until I realized that I hated doing what everyone else was doing and I just couldn’t handle blending in to the crowd. I felt insignificant. So I ditched those plans, got a Music Major, and went on to teach piano for the next 8 years. Teaching piano was crucial for multiple reasons: it showed me that teaching was one of my THINGS, it gave me the opportunity to work through the challenge of teaching from 4 - 60 year-olds, and it introduced me to the “travel from home to home” routine. Of course, now I travel from house to house fixing and maintaining equipment instead of people! Piano teaching came to an end after I realized it was difficult to make a solid living and because of the increasing lack of willpower of parents/students to keep working at such a difficult instrument. I joined the Carpenter’s Union for a few short months at the start of 2020 and worked at 3 nuclear plants building scaffolding and living a VERY different kind of life. That just wasn’t for me, so on I moved. Remodeling work entered the picture...then maintenance at a climate-controlled storage facility with a TON of heat pump systems!  After much thought, I decided that the heating and air field was the most intriguing. I DEFINITELY lucked out when I was granted an apprenticeship at Brown Heating and Cooling where the founder of BTrained, Brian Byrom, was the service manager at the time. Brian and the owners of Brown (Jamie and Tina White) hired me on, I took the 16-week HVAC course at BTrained, and the rest is history!  From the start, I was determined to learn everything I could and to always be at the top of my game. I have worked for multiple HVAC companies over the past few years and now I own and operate my own. Being in business for myself is something I will never regret, even though it requires so much more time and responsibility. The combination of teaching at BTrained and operating MaconAire keeps me busy and satisfied, knowing that I am contributing everything I can to the betterment of homes, businesses, and PEOPLE. I wouldn't have it any other way. I am here to help, and I mean that. Everyone needs a solid HVAC tech in their lives. I'd be honored to be yours.
